BBC Sport reported today that Liverpool FC have agreed an £8.5m transfer fee with Inter to secure the services of Philippe Coutinho following a drawn out battle with Southampton for the young Brazilian. Liverpool hasn’t made an official statement with regard to the deal – the club still has to agree to personal terms with the creative attacking midfielder in addition to Coutinho passing the medical, which is rumoured to be taking place sometime this coming week.

Young players seem to flourish under Rodgers’ management style and one would tend to believe that the Liverpool boss would bring out the best in the talented young Brazilian. Not to mention playing alongside the likes of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard.

If the reports are true and we can agree to personal terms with Coutinho and we’re not paying ridiculous wages, this could turn out to be a great piece of business for the club of course, assuming that he settles in well). After paying arguably excessive fees for Downing, Henderson and Allen, at £8.5m Coutinho could end up being a shrewd piece of business in a difficult window.

Coutinho will be joining the Rodgers Revolution at Anfield and there’s no doubt that Liverpool are looking to build on a very thin squad. Coutinho’s attacking skills would be welcomed with open arms on Merseyside, providing the Reds another option after the addition of Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini’s return to fitness. With a whole host of talented youngsters at LFC, the future is no doubt promising – but the jury is still out on whether the relatively young squad will be able to deliver trophies and a top four finish.

If LFC does complete the signing, it will be interesting to see how Coutinho copes with the pace and physical nature of the Premier League. There’s no question that Coutinho
has got a great touch and is quite comfortable with the ball at his feet, but having a go at center halves like Kompany, Shawcross, Vidic et al. week in, week out isn’t exactly a stroll in the park.
